Large Masterpiece Jaguar - Oaxacan Alebrije Wood Carving

Spectacular jaguar wood carving by husband and wife duo Jose Calvo & Magaly Fuentes. The amount of workmanship and time that went into this alebrije wood carving is impressive. The carving was done by Jose with expert precision and the painting by Magaly is stunning with the distinctive vibrant colors and patterns that she has become very well known for.

This piece is decorated with traditional Oaxacan Zapotec patterns in black detail over an elegant and vibrant multicolor palette.

The decorative patterns found on this piece are locally known as "grecas" and can be found at the pyramids of Mitla and Monte Alban in Oaxaca. These patterns are the benchmark of the indigenous Zapotec civilization and are very influential in the many different forms of artwork made in the region. These grecas patterns are so meticulously and finely painted with agave thorns which is used instead of a brush in order to provide the fine lines that a traditional brush can't produce. The beautiful painting work makes this Oaxacan wood carving alebrije unique & valuable.
