This gorgeous armadillo alebrije wood carving was handcrafted by top Oaxacan artist Ivan Fuentes and his wife Mayte at his workshop in San Martin Tilcajete. Ivan is the son of famed Oaxacan artist Epifanio Fuentes who was one of the original 7 carvers to popularize the art of wood carving in Oaxaca several decades ago. This piece was carved out of locally and sustainably sourced copal wood which is the preferred wood for alebrijes due to it's exceptional wood carving properties which allow intricate details to be carved into the soft wood.
