This mythical creature, also known as an alebrije, comes from the imagination of the artist and is brought to life on a blank piece of copal wood. The copal tree is a revered tree which is only found in Oaxaca and is the wood of choice for most artists due to its perfect properties for use in carving fine details such as this piece.
