This incredible work of art was made over the span of several months by Huichol artisans from a small community within the Sierra Madre mountains of Jalisco. The Huichol people draw inspiration for their art from their dreams and from the visions they see while using peyote. Peyote is very important to the Huichol people and is a part of their religious ceremonies as well. After the skull is cleaned and fully prepared, the artist adds a layer of bees wax throughout the area to be decorated. Bees wax is a natural adhesive and also doesn't dry fast which is perfect for this type of art which takes several dozen hours to complete. The artist typically uses over 30,000 beads for an art piece of this size and the final product is truly a work of art and one of a kind.
The skull measures 19" between horns, 20" from top to bottom, and 12" depth. The skull was cleaned thoroughly and then painted silver before applying the beads one-by-one. Over 30,000 beads were placed one-by-one to create this wonderful work of art.
