The detailed painting tells a story of the ancient Zapotecs and the depiction of the ancient calendar.

Back:  The design on the bulls back depicts 20 days of the Zapotec calendar: calm, wind, house, lizard, snake, death, deer, rabbit, water, dog, monkey, grass, cane, jaguar, eagle, vulture, earthquake, flint, rain, and flower.

Left Side: Jaguar warrior - cosmic movement. Huitzilopochtli - supreme of war and storm. Eagle warrior - fertility.
