Exceptional one-piece masterpiece by the Sosa family at their workshop in Oaxaca. This snail-skull fusion was carved out of a single large piece of copal wood which is sourced from the trees growing around the town of San Martin Tilcajete. The copal tree is native to Oaxaca and is considered to be sacred. The amount of detail in this piece is jaw dropping. The vibrant colors and Zapotec patterns that the Sosa family is known for really shines through in this very well made wood carving alebrije. A great piece of Mexican folk art by one of the most popular art families.
