Pepita Winged Jaguar - Oaxacan Alebrije Wood Carving

Exceptional alebrije carving by the very talented husband & wife duo Jose Calvo & Magaly Fuentes. Expertly carved by Jose out of copal wood which is sustainably sourced in the fields surrounding the town of San Martin Tilcajete. This wood is considered to be sacred and is the wood of choice for artists in the region. This fabulous pepita carving incorporates parts from various animals which is a feature of traditional alebrijes or "nahuales": the body and face of a jaguar, horns of a ram, wings of an eagle, and tail of an iguana. The painting by Magaly is absolutely breathtaking and incorporates the Fuentes traditional stylenand vibrant colors along with Zapotec inspired elements on the arms, legs, tail & wings.  An excellent work of Mexican folk art and a great addition to any art collection!
