Exquisite griffin alebrije wood carving by the very talented Morales family. This exceptionally well made alebrije was handcrafted out of copal wood which was locally and sustainably sourced in the fields surrounding the workshop. Copal wood is native to Oaxaca and is considered to be sacred. The patterns on this piece were inspired by ancient Zapotec symbols which can be found on the many ruins scattered throughout Oaxaca. The ancient Zapotec culture has a great importance in Oaxaca and in the art that is created there.
